Often we hear from current clients and prospective clients “Oh, YouTube is free. We’ll just do that.” Yes, it is by all accounts free. Free is used loosely with a lot of topics and online applications. And I say this as a person who loves YouTube. I mean it. I really love it; the idea, the implementation and everything in between. Without YouTube I wouldn’t have known the delight of Will Ferrell and Jimmy Fallon in a video featuring a fight over tight pants. You can’t make this stuff up. The whole thing jazzes up this video girl when I think about how it has changed our world for the better.
It is free to an extent. When it comes to optimizing your video on YouTube it isn’t as “free” as a puppy in a basket on the side of the road looking for a home. It does take some work, energy and even cost of time.
To quote Rush,
“You don’t get something for nothing
You can’t have freedom for free
You won’t get wise
With the sleep still in your eyes
No matter what your dreams might be”
I just quoted Rush. Yes, it just happened. Even so it is true in life and it is true in YouTube.
YouTube offers so much and it takes a bit away as well. It changes without a much notice if any and then it brings you back with a fun new look or feature. It is a merry-go-round.
Success on YouTube does take some effort. Optimizing is an effort with titles, tagging, producing the video and while you don’t have to be Spielberg to create a video it does take expertise to get the most bang for your effort on YouTube.
So please approach YouTube with an open mind and know that the price might not be high but there is a price. It is the best friend of video content providers and users; it is the best friend that you take to lunch more than they take you.
