Cisco predicts mobile data traffic trends for the next four years, and coupled with current facts, these predictions offer great insight into today’s usage and the growth of mobile consumers’ preferences.
- Smartphones will exceed 50% of mobile data this year, and tablets will exceed 10% over the next two years.
- Mobile-connected tablets will generate more mobile data traffic in 2017 then the entire global mobile network generated in 2012.
- Video will account for two-thirds of the world’s mobile data traffic by 2017.
Smartphones, tablets, and laptops using mobile networks will be the major generators of mobile data traffic over the next four years. As shown in the image (courtesy of Cisco), one smartphone currently generates as much mobile data traffic as 50, yes 50!, basic phones. Currently, video is the highest percentage of data consumption on smartphones (45%) and tablets (50%).
Video is predicted to have the highest growth rate of mobile traffic categories through 2017. Mobile network connection speeds are constantly increasing, and soon high-definition video will be the norm with streaming content increasing over side-loaded content.
