Always adapting to its audience, Instagram noticed Snapchat‘s success and decided to put their twist on 24-hour video and photo sharing. And so Instagram Stories was introduced.
What are Instagram Stories?
Instagram Stories allow users to post video or photos from the last 24 hours or to create live content. Then the user’s content appears in the area above the typical Instagram feed with a purplish color circle around their profile picture. This means a user has fresh Instagram Story content.
Once a user clicks on someone else’s Instagram Story, the content will pop up and play for a short amount of time. Then Instagram automatically goes to the next piece of content – whether it be from the same user or a different one.
Instagram Stories is similar to Snapchat, but the content can be a bit more polished, versus Snapchat which is raw and unedited.
One last note: Instagram recently launched a “Live” version of their Stories feature. This allows users to stream a live video to their followers like another social media platform, Periscope.
Your Instagram Story Audience
Using Instagram Stories for your business is becoming big business. Retail giants like Starbucks and Nike have both started to upload Stories on a regular basis. Small er businesses have begun utilizing the social media service, too.
Before you start hitting up Instagram Stories, it’s important to understand a few things. First, only one in every three Instagram users views Stories. However, that means over 100 million people could see your story. That’s a huge audience.
Plus, your company’s audience is already built-in from the followers you’ve accumulated on Instagram. There’s no need to search around to build a new audience like you have to on a newer social media platform.
Build Your Business With Instagram Stories
Now that you understand the Story feature on Instagram let’s talk a little bit about how you can use it to build your business. Here are a few ideas:
- Special Offers: One of the best ways to ensure your followers check out your Stories is through special offers. Just add a photo or video of a special offer on your Instagram Story and make sure your fans know about it. It’s that simple!
- Behind the Scenes: People love inside content. So don’t be afraid to show some behind the scenes footage on your Story that you wouldn’t usually post. This might be preparing for a community party or just showing the behind the scenes work your team does to make your community better every day. You’ll add a personal touch to the account. Plus, it’ll be gone in 24 hours anyway.
- Trust the Process: Creating new products or building a new part of your community, then show the process to your followers. For example, if your apartment community is going through renovations, then make sure your Instagram Story is filled with updates about the process.
- Get Out the Vote: Choosing a minute detail and need some help? Show the options to your followers and then ask everyone to vote on their favorite. The DM feature on Instagram is linked with Stories and makes this incredibly easy. This will get followers involved on your account as well as the community overall!
